Detour was originally written for woodwind quintet. In 2024 it was rewritten with a cello added to the quintet.

Shadows and echoes are two different physical phenomena, but there are some similarities between them. Both shadows and echoes are created when an object or sound wave encounters an obstacle. These similarities were the inspiration for Detour. The piece was previously titled Echoing Shadows.
